加拿大多伦多大学麦克卢汉McLuhan文化和技术中心的“以中国来认识当代媒体研究小组”欢迎大家参加11月20日周五北美东部时间下午2-3点钟的英文学术讲座。详情可参见后面的英文通知。

该英文学术讲座系列是由公号共同创办人暨多伦多大学媒体研究和比较文学中心的白若云(Ruoyun Bai)教授参与由本校几位同事(包括陈玉洁(Julie Yujie Chen), 顾伊(Evie Gu)和林东(Tong Lam)教授)以及几位外校同行一起组织的为期一年的云上学术讲座活动。

主讲人简介

杨国斌教授现任宾夕法尼亚大学安嫩伯格传播学院和社会学系Grace Lee Boggs传播学和社会学讲座教授、数字文化与社会研究中心主任、当代中国研究中心副主任；1993年获北京外国语大学英美文学专业（文学翻译）博士，2000年获纽约大学社会学博士学位；曾任教于夏威夷大学和哥伦比亚大学巴纳德学院。杨国斌教授的研究重点是数字媒体和社会理论，社会运动，在线行动主义，全球传播，环境行动主义，文化社会学以及中国的媒体和政治。著有《连线力：中国网民在行动》（2009年）、《红卫兵世代与中国政治行动主义》（2016年），及《文心雕龙英译》（2003年，大中华文库版，2卷本）。

刘晓教授现为加拿大麦吉尔大学东亚系助理教授和世界电影项目成员。她获得美国加州大学伯克利分校博士学位。她的研究集中于cybernetics, 信息技术和数码媒体, 中国电影, 科幻小说, 后社会主义文化与批判。除了发表一系列学术文章之外，她目前主要是研究八十年代左右的中国信息技术和话语的文化实践和媒体想象。

Behind and Beyond the Wall(s): Contemporary Media through China working group at the McLuhan Centre for Culture and Technology, University of Toronto invites all interested scholars to attend its first workshop with Yang Guobin and Liu Xiao. 
After the public-facing talk, we will arrange a private session with the two speakers. This is intended to give our working group members and other invitation-only researchers the opporunity to interact the two speakers in a more informal and social manner. About this Event
Human entanglement with information technologies not only involves the redistribution of the sensible but is also highly charged with socio-political tensions. Take the Internet in China as an example. Since the mid-1990s, its development has resonated with the unprecedented transformation of Chinese society. By providing a virtual space for entertainment, public engagement, and the cultivation of new social imaginaries, the Internet takes on special social and cultural significance. Nonetheless, little research attention has been paid to the not-so-distant past prior to China’s Internet age.
What do the histories of cybernetics and information technology before China’s internet age tell us about the country’s information present and future(s)? This workshop aims to shed light on this question by drawing upon recent academic work by two leading scholars in the field of Chinese media studies.

Dr. Guobin Yang, Annenberg School for Communication & Department of Sociology, UPenn
Topic: “Lost and Found: Notes on Some Relics of Digital Future”: 
The speaker will discuss the significance of history and memory for thinking about digital futures. His examination of several specimens of digital culture will offer a glimpse into possible information futures.

Dr. Xiao Liu, Eastern Asian Studies, McGill University 
Topic: “Cybernetic Past(s) of the Future(s)” 
The speaker will share the research and reflections around her recent book Information Fantasies: Precarious Mediation in Postsocialist China (University of Minnesota Press, 2019).
